Helen Scagline

Helen Scagline, 94, of Monongahela, died Tuesday, February 2, 2021, in the Mon Valley Care Center, Monongahela. She was born December 26, 1926, in Ella Hollow, the daughter of Nicholas and Stella Rosetta Sosanko.

Helen was a member of the First Christian Church in Monongahela and its Open Door Class. She was employed at several places during her lifetime, including Woolworth’s Five & Dime in Monongahela, Halpern’s Sewing Factory in New Eagle and during World War II, worked for U.S. Steel at the Clairton Mill. She retired from Singers at the Southland Plaza in Pleasant Hills where she taught sewing for numerous years. Helen enjoyed hunting and fishing with her husband, John.

Helen is survived by her daughter, Diane Leach and husband John, with whom she made her home; daughter-in-law, Holly Scagline of Monongahela; five grandchildren, John David Scagline and wife Laurel, Jeff Scagline, Cara Scagline and fiance Nikki Davis, Lisa Nicholson and husband David, John Regis Leach and wife Anna; three great-grandchildren, Sophia and John Joseph Leach and Owen Nicholson.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Scagline, who died January 25, 1993; son, John N. Scagline, who died June 2, 2016; sister, Anna Scagline; and two brothers, Mike and John Sosanko.

Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, February 5, in the Frye Funeral Home Inc., 427 West Main Street, Monongahela. Family and friends attending the funeral are asked to meet at the First Christian Church, 630 Chess Street in Monongahela Saturday, February 6, for services beginning at 9 a.m. with the Rev. Janet Scott-Mace officiating. A private interment will take place in the Monongahela Cemetery.
