Kelly John Alderson Sr., 70, of Washington, died unexpectedly, Tuesday, February 23, 2021.

He was born March 11, 1950, in Canonsburg, a son of Anthony “Kelly” and Dorothy Kimes Alderson. He was a graduate of Canon-McMillan High School and a 1972 graduate of Washington & Jefferson College. He was a stand-out wrestler in both high school and college. He earned state championship titles twice in high school and was named an All American and won two PAC titles in his weight division while at Washington & Jefferson.

Kelly was a member of the Canonsburg United Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon and an elder for a number of years. He followed his children’s extra-curricular activities and was a scout master for over 14 years with Troop 1005.

In 1977, he went into business with his father-in-law, Henry Sawchuck. Upon the retirement of Mr. Sawchuck, Kelly continued the business, American Battery Inc.

In his spare time, he enjoyed puttering in the yard and was particularly proud of his berry plants. He was a collector of Volkswagens and loved driving them. He is fondly remembered for being a prankster and making people laugh. Kelly was known for his gift of gab and an associate once fondly commented “He could sell anyone the Brooklyn Bridge.” Vacations at the Jersey Shore with his family were the highlight of many summers.

On August 11, 1973, he married the love of his life, Andrea Sawchuck Alderson, who survives. Also surviving are his son, Kelly J. (Maggie) Alderson Jr. of Washington; his grandson, Thomas Kelly Alderson; his daughter, Anne-Marie Alderson of Alexandria, Virginia; his brother, Craig (Sandra) Alderson of Meadowlands; sister, Lynlee Caliguiri of Peters Township; nieces, Amy Guarino and Julie Alderson; and his nephews, Drew Caliguiri and Craig (Lilla) Alderson.
