Daniel Paul Wineland
Daniel Paul Wineland, 84, went to be with his Heavenly Father Tuesday, December 29, 2020. Sadly, he passed away in the Monongahela Valley Hospital due to complications of COVID-19. He was born May 13, 1936, in Donora, to Daniel L. and Viola Atee Wineland. Dan was a 1954 graduate of Monongahela High School.
In 1953, during the Korean War era, he enlisted in the U.S. Army National Guard and was part of the 110th Infantry Regiment as an MOS Rifleman 4745 until being honorably discharged to continue serving his country in the U.S. Air Force, where he was a member of the 54th Fighter Squadron as a PAFSC 32251D Weapon Control Systems Mechanic. During active duty in the U.S. Air Force, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal as well as the Good Conduct Medal before being honorably discharged in 1957.
Dan was skilled in many areas and worked for Irey Industries, M & K Electric, Mon Valley Vocational Technical School and J & R Steel. He was a foreman in the Electric Shop, Tube Division when he retired from Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel in Allenport after 35 years of service.
In the 1970s Dan was instrumental in the formation of Tri Community Ambulance Service, where he served as president and volunteer. He was one of the first in the valley to become a registered EMT. He also taught CPR classes. Dan was a volunteer fireman for 18 years with the Monongahela Fire Department.
An avid sports enthusiast, Dan held several tennis titles, played softball for his Air Force unit and leagues throughout the years, and enjoyed playing golf. He also coached various youth baseball teams for his three sons.
He was a member of the Monongahela Church of the Nazarene, American Legion Post 302, America Legion Post 949, Hoot Owls Athletic Association, Arroas Haymakers Associates 258, Masonic Lodge 337, Mon Valley YMCA and the Mon Valley Honor Guard.
Dan enjoyed attending family functions and events, playing computer and board games, watching TV westerns and traveling. His trips to the Philippines, Central and South America, and Hawaii were favorite topics of discussion. He was also a fan of all Pittsburgh franchise sports and was thrilled to attend games.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 63 years, Gloria Aulicino Wineland; two daughters, Dana (Timothy) O’Rourke of Monongahela, Terri Wineland of Elizabeth Township; three sons, Dean (Riza) Wineland of San Fernando, La Union, Philippines, Ronald (Mary) Wineland of Monongahela and Roger (Stephanie) Wineland of Monongahela; grandchildren, Timothy (Kelli) O’Rourke, Daniel (Lauren) O’Rourke, Krista (Ross) Ruth, Sean Wineland and Rhiannon Wineland; great-grandchildren, Karli Sutton and Brady, Quinnlynn, Murphy, Kaden and Gianna O’Rourke; sisters, Ruth Kenny, Carolyn (Jonathan) Sweeney and Esther McCarty; brother-in-law, Roger (Sharon) Aulicino; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Private visitation and funeral services were held in the Frye Funeral Home, Inc. in Monongahela. Interment was also held privately in the Monongahela Cemetery with the Pastor Raymond DiCamillo presiding, along with full military honors.
