James E. Speck

James E. Speck, 88, formerly of Washington, died Monday, January 11, 2020, in the Hallsworth House, Monessen.

He was born March 12, 1932, in Washington, a son of the late Roy A. and Eleanor L. Lang Speck.

Mr. Speck was a member of West Washington United Methodist Church, where he served as a trustee and an usher.

He was a graduate of Washington High School.

Mr. Speck worked as printer for the Observer Publishing Company. He retired from the Observer-Reporter December 31, 1999, after 48 years of service.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Edwin Scott Linton Post #175, of the American Legion.

On October 24, 1958, in Washington, he married the love of his life, Betty J. Maine, who died January 22, 2019.

Surviving are a son, Ryan J. (Trudy) Speck of Monessen; a sister, Marlene R. (Jerry) Estep of Florida; two grandchildren, Mikayla and Brayden Speck.

Deceased are a brother, Roy A. Speck; and two sisters, Dorothy McKissick and Evelyn Spence.

Friends will be received from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m.., Thursday in the Hummell and Jones Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, Douglas M. Jones, supervisor, Dr. Lawrence K. Donovan, director. Services and entombment will be private in Washington Cemetery, where full military honors will be afforded by Edwin Scott Linton Post #175, of the American Legion and the U.S. Army. Condolences may be expressed at www.hummellandjones.com. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be directed to the veteran’s charity of one’s choice.
