Russell Curtis Sherbondy

Russell Curtis Sherbondy, 85, of Hagerstown, Md., formerly of Waynesburg, passed away Friday, July 9, 2021, in Meritus Hospital, Hagerstown. He was born November 29, 1935, in Washington, to the late James C. Sherbondy and the late Ruth D. Sherbondy. His childhood was spent in Clarksville.

Russell graduated from Jefferson Morgan High School, Jefferson, in 1953, and Waynesburg College, Waynesburg, in 1960.

He was a social studies teacher, special education teacher and basketball coach in Maryland and Pennsylvania. He taught at Fort Meade, Arundel Junior High School, Northeast High School, West Greene High School, and the Intermediate Unit.

Russell married his wife, Patricia Sherbondy, in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Annapolis, Md., August 26, 1961.

He loved his Pittsburgh teams: Steelers, Pirates, Penguins and Panthers. Russell enjoyed all sports, gardening, fishing, hunting and trips to Ocean City, Md.

Russell is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Sherbondy; his loving daughter, Jeanette (Eric) Higgins; and his loving grandchildren, Danielle Higgins and Tyler Higgins. He is also survived by his brother, James (Deanna) Sherbondy; three nephews; and several cousins.

There will be a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Monday, July 19, in St. Ann Catholic Church, 1525 Oak Hill Avenue, Hagerstown, Md. Graveside services will be private for immediate family.
