Madeline Rowe Corwin
Madeline Rowe Corwin, 89, a longtime resident of East Washington, died Saturday, July 17, 2021, in Strabane Woods, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born December 10, 1931, in Middletown, a daughter of Milton Rowe and Lottie Kohl Rowe.
On August 24, 1957, she married Dr. Douglas T. Corwin Sr., who passed away July 27, 2002. Also deceased are three siblings, Milton Rowe Jr., Jacqueline Bretz and Suzanne Rowe.
Madeline is survived by three children, Dr. Douglas T. (Lucy) Corwin Jr. of Washington, Nancy (Chris) Sanders of Fishersville, Va., and Susan (Chris) Moreau of Springfield, Va.; four grandchildren, Jonathan Sanders of Providence, R.I., Emily Sanders of Waltham, Mass., Helen Moreau and Thomas Moreau of Springfield. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
She graduated from the Philadelphia General Hospital School of Nursing in 1953 and worked for a time in that city’s Department of Public Health, then as a nurse in Akron, Ohio.
Love of travel took her to such locations as Great Britain, Ireland, Kenya, Egypt, Jordan, Italy, Switzerland and the Netherlands. She enjoyed corresponding with her pen pal from England for 78 years. Madeline always had a story to tell, an opinion to share, or a suggestion to make.
She was active in the Washington community, volunteering for the Washington Hospital and W&J auxiliaries, the county and state medical societies, Easter Seals, United Way, First Presbyterian Church and the local women’s shelter.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Domestic Violence Services of Southwestern Pennsylvania or Washington Hospital Foundation.
A visitation will be held from 10 until the 11 a.m. hour of services Friday, July 23, in Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, with the Rev. Dr. Steve Smith of First Presbyterian Church officiating. All other services will be private.
