Ruth Esther Balas Levy
Ruth Esther Balas Levy, 88, passed away peacefully Saturday, February 27, 2021, in The Residence at Hilltop Assisted Living Facility. Born October 17, 1932, in Monessen, Ruth was a daughter of Michael and Catherine Hornack Balas.
Ruth was a telephone operator in Charleroi after graduating from Charleroi High School Class of 1950. She also worked as a clerk at Crossroads (later became Get-Go) for almost 20 years.
A charter member of Grace United Methodist Church in Coal Center, Ruth also participated in the choir, youth sponsor, Bible school, church secretary and organist. She was a member of Sweet Adeline’s and was a 50-year member of Fallowfield Grange 1382. Ruth also volunteered at Center in the Woods in California for more than 11 years.
On June 12, 1954, she married Samuel L. Levy, who preceded her in death October 27, 2020. They celebrated 66 years of marriage.
She loved her flower gardens, enjoyed crossword puzzles, bingo, scrabble and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Survivors include her brother, Michael and Doris Balas; and sister C. Louise and the Rev. Charles (deceased) Fair; sisters-in-law Johanne Levy and Sally Sedunov; son-in-law Peter (Danny) Horvath; daughters-in-law Judith Levy and Michalle (Dale) Richardson; her four grandchildren, Lisa and Brian Lohr, Timothy (TJ) and Nicole Levy, Chris and Lhen Levy, and Jess and Samantha Levy; five great-grandchildren, Ross and Maxx Lohr, Timothy and Braden Levy, and Isabella Levy.
At the request of the family, all services will be held privately. Interment has occurred at Maple Creek Cemetery in Fallowfield Township.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Schrock-Hogan Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 226 Fallowfield Avenue, Charleroi.
