John Ondrick
John “Yunko” Ondrick, 94, of Avella, passed away Monday, March 15, 2021, in Townview Health and Rehabilitation Center, Canonsburg.
He was born November 18, 1926, in Avella, a son of the late George and Mary Harris Ondrick.
Mr. Ondrick attended Avella High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a private 1st class in the Infantry Regiment and was honorably discharged in 1947.
Yunko worked at Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel in the coke plant for 37 years retiring in 1988.
He was a lifelong resident of Avella. He was a member of Polar Star Mutual Benefit Society and Bert C. Siders American Legion Post #643, both of Avella.
Yunko enjoyed horse and dog racing and gambling at the casino. He was always the “butcher” during hunting season at his nephew, Buddy’s hunting shed.
Yunko loved to entertain his family playing the guitar and singing. He even created his own dance know to everyone as the “Yunko Shuffle”.
Surviving Mr. Ondrick are his nieces, Patsy, Marion, Michelle, Ellen and Brenda; his nephews, Joe, Kenny and Danny; and several great-nieces and nephews.
Deceased, in addition to his parents, are four sisters, Mary Myers, Helen Myers, Ann Cruny and Elizabeth Campanelli; three brothers, George, Joseph and Michael Ondrick; four nephews, Richard, Buddy, Alfred and Larry Joseph; and a niece, Geraldine.
There will be no visitation. Private burial will be in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.
