George Yilit, 88, of Avella, passed away Saturday, October 22, 2021, in Washington Hospital, following a lengthy illness.

He was born October 27, 1932, in Monessen, a son of Milarod and Anna Yilit, the second eldest of the boys.

George was a corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korean War serving from 1953-1955. After his service, he worked at Corning Glass in Charleroi. He then worked for Clariton Steel Mill for many years before opening his own business, Yilit Excavating, from which he retired.

Surviving are his loving wife, Iva, who he married April 6, 1955. They had been married 68 years.

George is also survived by his three daughters, Pamela Holman (Jake) of Mt. Nebo, Kimberly Mace (Mark) of Avella, and Georgann Miller (Roy) of Avella; six grandchildren, Blake Brandenburg (Tasha) of Sewickley, Joshua Mace (Christine) of Avella, Tiffiny Mahland (Sean) of Avella, Katrina Noga (Codie) of Brooke County, W.Va., Brandon Miller (Lyndy) of Burgettstown, and Trenton Miller of Avella; six great-grandsons, who he loved dearly, Blain and Dusty Mace, Colten, Dakota and Ty Mahland, and Bryson Brandenburg; a sister, Ann Seng of Avella; several nieces and nephews, and two special nieces, Jodi and DeeDee Seng, who visited him often and will miss him dearly; and his dog, Gumby, his little side-kick.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Milan and Steve Yilit; and two sisters, Mary Lou Skoukat and Evanta, who died as a toddler.

He was and always will be remembered as a wonderful husband, father, and pap to all of his family. He taught us so many things in life, from working hard to picking sweet corn. He was never a stranger to anyone. Many people may know him and his youngest daughter from selling sweet corn along the road. He taught each and everyone of us who wanted to learn to hunt, as that was his passion.

Family and friends will be received from 10 a.m. until noon Friday, October 29, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd, 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. A service will immediately follow, with Pastor Brian Knight officiating. Burial to follow in Upper Buffalo Cemetery.

Military honors will be accorded by American Legion Post 175.
