Ethel Chalfant
With heavy hearts we share the passing of Ethel McNary Chalfant, 87, Tuesday, August 31, 2021.
Formerly of Washington, and Murrells Inlet, S.C., she was residing in Youngsville at the time of her death.
Born November 7, 1933, in Thomas, she was a graduate of Claysville High School.
Ethel is survived by her husband of 66 years, Archie Bergen Chalfant; daughters Sheree Troy (Tom) of Valdese, N.C., and Darla Herrnberger (Philip) of Irvine; grandchildren Grant Herrnberger of Proctor, W.Va., Abigail Herrnberger Novotny (Mike) of Slippery Rock; four great-grandchildren, Clayton, Raigyn, Bena and Everett; two sisters, Donna Kraeer of McDonald and Jean McNary of Murrells Inlet; and many nieces and nephews.
Ethel was predeceased by her father and mother, Elden Merle and Dorothy Cuthbert McNary of Eighty-Four; and three brothers, Merle Allen, Glenn and Clarence (Sonny) McNary of Eighty-Four.
She was a member of First United Presbyterian Church of Washington, and later the First Presbyterian Church of Myrtle Beach, S.C., where she served as a deacon.
Early on, Ethel worked as a telephone operator for Pacific Telephone & Telegraph, Bell of PA, and GTE in Myrtle Beach.
The majority of her life was spent as a homemaker and she loved traveling. She and Archie square danced with Grand Strand Strutters for many years. She was an avid reader, played Mah Jong, and enjoyed card games. She volunteered at Habitat for Humanity, Help 4 Kids and Backpack Buddies of Horry County, S.C. Ethel will be remembered for her quick wit and her passion for new recipes.
As per her wishes, there is no public viewing. She will be interred with Archie at a later date.
