Sophia Scarcella Merriner
Sophia Scarcella Merriner, 93, of Langeloth, passed away Monday, September 6, 2021, in her residence at Country Meadows Retirement Community, Bridgeville. She and her twin sister, Sylvia were born May 5, 1928, in Fairmont, W.Va., into a family of 11 other children of the late Pasquale and Teresa Candalise Scarcella.
Sophie supported the World War II war effort by working at Westinghouse and Owens Glass.
Sophie was a self-taught cook, baker, seamstress and crocheter. She took great joy in crocheting afghans and sewing fashionable clothes for herself and her daughter, Rita. Her pies and pastries were celebrated by family and friends. Sophie also volunteered at the Burgettstown Senior Center in her spare time.
Her husband of 71 years, Bill Duane Merriner, whom she married August 24, 1947, passed away March 14, 2019.
She is survived by her four children, Bill D. Merriner and wife Elaine of Follansbee, W.Va., Rita Yvonne Baileys and husband Ray of Jefferson Hills, Robert Lewis Merriner and wife Deborah of Annandale, Va., and Ronald Lee Merriner and wife Cindy of Burgettstown; grandchildren Amanda Hixenbaugh, Alyssa Feaster, Michael and Jason Baileys, and Trisha, Christy, Carey, Lindsay, Chelsea and Loni Merriner; great-grandchildren Abigail, Megan, Aidan, Donald James, Jonathan, Amelia, Benjamin, Julia, Natalia, Lennox, Gabriella and Austin; her twin sister, Sylvia; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, September 9, in the Lee & Martin Funeral Home, 73 Highland Avenue, Burgettstown, PA 15021, that will include a memorial funeral service conducted by Minister Steve Smithbauer of the Weirton Heights Church Of Christ at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in memory of Sophia at 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 10, in Our Lady of Lourdes Church of St. Isadore the Farmer Parish, 1109 Main Street, Burgettstown, with the Rev. Tom Kredel as celebrant. She will be laid to rest beside her husband in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray.
