John William Garrett, Sr.

John William Garrett Sr., 73, of Blaine Township, died Sunday, January 2, 2022, in Canonsburg Hospital.

He was born April 28, 1948, in Washington, a son of the late Robert L. Garrett and Mae Stage Garrett.

Mr. Garrett worked at Washington Steel for many years. He enjoyed reading books about the Vietnam War, watching westerns on television, tinkering with cars, and, most of all, spending time with his grandchildren.

A Vietnam veteran, Mr. Garrett served in the Marine Corps from November 5, 1967, until his honorable discharge as a corporal, on August 1, 1970. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one star, Vietnam Campaign Medal with device, Combat Action Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and Rifle Sharpshooter Badge.

On March 11, 1967, he married his beloved wife, Vicky Miller, who died September 3, 2007.

Surviving are four children, John William (Veronica) Garrett, Jr., and Patricia Garrett, both of Apex, N.C., Wendy Garrett of Columbia, Tenn., and Matthew Garrett of Claysville; four brothers, Glen (Shirley) Garrett, of Claysville, Barry Garrett, Dennis (Sue) Garrett, and Tim Garrett, all of Washington; two sisters, Linda McGowan and Sandy Gomez, both of Washington; 12 grandchildren, Alexis (Cory) Maxwell, Tyler Garrett, Patrick Putman, Trevor Garrett, Dylan Garrett, Brady Garrett, Cody Garrett, Mason Garrett, Mary Turner, Abby Pavella, Emmy Garrett, and Scotty Garrett; five great-grandchildren, Ivy Putman, Hayes Maxwell, Axel Garrett, Colten Garrett, and Layke Maxwell; and many nieces and nephews.

Deceased are two brothers, Bobby and Bud Garrett.

Friends will be received from 10 a.m. till 12 p.m., the time of service, Monday, January 10th, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Burial will follow in Claysville Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded graveside by American Legion Hunt-Kennedy Post 639, Claysville.
