John J. Sliman, 80, of Venice, Fla., passed away Friday, April 22, 2022.

John was born December 1, 1941, in Washington, to the late John and Josephine Sliman.

After graduating from Washington High School, John received a bachelor’s degree from California University, and then a master’s degree from University of Pittsburgh.

John served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Saratoga during the Cuban Missile Blockade.

After an honorable discharge from the Navy, John started his career as a teacher at Peters Township High School before entering the social work profession at Western Center as a case worker. He then became the assistant superintendent at Mayview State Hospital.

After retirement, he worked at AON and was a substitute teacher at Washington and Venice high schools. John possessed a genuine passion to teach, guide, direct, and help everyone he encountered and attempted to assist everyone in any way possible with his worldly knowledge.

John was a member of the American Legion, the Rotary Club and was a member and lector of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Venice.

He was an avid golfer and was involved in several theatrical performances in Washington Community Theater and California University.

John met his true love, Jane, originally in the eighth grade and then later on in life, John and Jane thoroughly enjoying living their years after retirement in their dream location in Venice. He enjoyed his life to the fullest while maintaining a heathy sense of humor despite many health challenges, and always maintained a positive and uplifting attitude and desired to make others smile.

John is survived by his wife, Jane Sorice Sliman; his son, Jason Sliman; aunts, Gina Sliman Livelli (Michael), Maureen Sliman (Bobby, deceased); as well as many wonderful family members from the Sliman and Dasta family; and a brother-in-law, Sam Sorice (Patty).

He was preceded in death by his stepson, Chip Frank; and his parents.

John’s burial was at the Sarasota National Cemetery with a private military service. A combined Celebration of Life in Venice, for John and his stepson, Chip Frank, will be announced at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Myositis Association. John Sliman fought a valiant battle with Inclusion Body Myositis, which he ultimately died from complications of this disease while taking great care of Jane post stroke.
