Harriet Mae Martys, 96, of Canonsburg, passed away peacefully with her family by her side, Sunday, June 5, 2022 in Donnell House, Washington.

She was born July 6, 1925 in Muse, a daughter of the late John and Anna Marie Neiser Funka.

Harriet was raised in Muse, lived in Canonsburg for 73 years and was a faithful member of St. Oscar Romero Parish, Holy Rosary Church. She taught Sunday school and was the CCD coordinator there for 25 years, organizing many Christmas pageants. She had been employed at the Intermediate Unit of both Washington and Allegheny Counties as a teacher’s assistant and at the daycare, Learning with Harmony in Canonsburg.

Harriet enjoyed oil painting, gardening and cooking. She just loved to take care of people and was the neighborhood mom where the kids all liked to gather.

On May 7, 1949 she married John Stephen Martys who passed away February 18, 1997 after 47 years of marriage.

Left behind to cherish her memory are her devoted children, Helen Fries and her husband, William W. of Canonsburg, John Martys and his wife, Kathleen of Morgantown West Virginia, William Martys of Canonsburg and Carol Groom and her husband, Mark of Lenoir, Tennessee; eight beloved grandchildren: Mikaela (Scott) Rickman, Erin Martys, Kristin Barnett, David (Mary) Martys, Bill (Emily) Fries, Carla (Nicholas) Shinner, Jeremiah (Jennifer) Groom and Jacob Groom; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Harriet was the last of her immediate family.

Deceased in addition to her husband and parents, are two brothers, George E. and John F. Funka; and her sister, Ann Densen.

Friends and family are welcome from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 9, 2022 in Salandra Funeral and Cremation Services Inc., Joseph P. Salandra LFD, owner / supervisor, 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg, where departing prayers will be recited at 9:20 a.m. Friday, June 10, 2022. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in St. Oscar Romero Parish, Holy Rosary Church in Muse. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray.
