Robert W. “Bob” Ghrist, 85, of Washington, died Tuesday, June, 7, 2022 in his home, surrounded by his family. He spent the last two years of his life under the care of his daughter Traci.

He was born November 21, 1936, in Washington, the son of the late Robert Franklin and Martha “Jean” McCullough Ghrist.

Bob was a 1954 graduate of Washington High School and went on to earn an associate’s degree in accounting from Penn Commercial.

He worked as a comptroller for the Redevelopment Authority of Washington County for 41 years before his retirement in 2004.

Bob was an avid sports fan. He especially loved the Pirates, Penguins, Steelers and the Tottenham Football Club, though he was known to change the channel when his teams were losing. Despite his love of sports, his greatest passions in life were his grandchildren.

He was a veteran, served in the U.S. Navy.

On August 5, 1956, in Washington, he married the love of his life, Carol Ann Bennett, who died November 26, 2005.

Surviving are a son, Robert W. (Dorinda) Ghrist Jr., of Canonsburg; two daughters, Kim A. (Paul) Pierson and Traci I. (John) Hoffman, both of Washington; a sister, Ann Union, of Texas; six grandchildren, Joshua P. (Kimberly) and Christopher M. Pierson, McKenna M. and Madison V. Hoffman, Melissa J. (Anthony) Bails-Ghrist, and Brianna N. Ghrist; two great-grandchildren, Cheyenne and Kaitlynn Pierson, and one more on the way, Brynlee Davis; and three nephews.

Also surviving is his dog, China, who loved Bob more than the pocket full of treats he always carried, and she made sure that he was not alone in his final moments.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, is his step-father, William Lunebring.

Friends will be received from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday, June 13, 2022, in the Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington. All other services are private.
