Robert Lee Matteson, Sr.

Sgt. Robert Lee Matteson, Sr., BA, 74, of Washington, died Thursday, June 16, 2022, in his home.

He was born March 9, 1948, in Washington, a son of the late Florence Marie Matteson Irey and stepson of the late Raymond Irey.

Robert was a 1966 graduate of Trinity High School and earned a Bachelor’s degree in 1992 from Washington & Jefferson College, in Business Management.

He retired from Sampson Glass & Mirror, where he was a glass glazier.

Sgt. Matteson proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. He was awarded the Purple Heart with a Gold Star, Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation with ribbon bar, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze stars, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation (Gallantry Cross color), Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation (Civil Actions color, 1st Class), Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Rifle Marksman Badge.

He was a lifetime member of the Military Order of Purple Hearts and Disabled American Veterans.

He loved trains of all types and decorating for Christmas.

He was a member of Friendship Community Church.

On June 28, 1969, Robert married Joyce Darlene Boardley, who survives. They were married for nearly 53 years.

Also surviving are sons, Robert Lee Matteson, Jr. (Marcy) and Brian Matteson (Melissa); daughter, Heather Smith (Michael); brothers, Raymond Irey, Jr. (Wendy), James Irey, and Donald Irey (Lisa); sisters, Anna Przystup (Frank, deceased), and Kathy Hall (Dewey); 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends and family will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, and Thursday, June 23, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 24, with Pastor Rick Bruckner officiating.

Interment to follow in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. Military Honors will be accorded by the USMC and American Legion Post 175.
