Herbert Smith Jr.

After a lengthy illness, Herbert Smith Jr. peacefully departed this earth Thursday, May 12, 2022, in Riverside, Calif. He was a longtime resident of Canonsburg, moving to California with his loving wife, Priscilla “Sookie” in the late 1970s.

Herbert was a graduate of Canonsburg High School in 1949 and the University of Pittsburgh in 1973.

While residing in Canonsburg, he was a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service and retired in California as civilian naval housing director for the United States Navy in Alameda, Calif. Soon after retiring, he relocated to Scottsdale, Ariz., of which he and his wife, Priscilla “Sookie” thoroughly enjoyed. He moved to Riverside, Calif., following the death of Sookie in 2017.

In his early years he was married to Betty Jean Alford, who preceded him in death along with one child, Herbert Smith (Little Herbie).

He leaves to mourn his children (in alphabetical order), Andrea Smith Wright of Chico, Calif., Dorothy (Tracey) Dixon of Riverside, Calif., Eleanor (Ronea) Girten of Phoenix, Ariz., Howard Hackley of Patterson, Calif., Karla Jean Fed of San Jose, Calif., and Kimberly Young of Casselberry, Fla.; 16 grandchildren and a host of great- and great-great grandchildren, cousins and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 1, at Forest Lawn Gardens Cemetery Chapel in McMurray, with his urn being placed with his wife, Priscilla.
