Hans Erminio Leumann
Hans Erminio Leumann, 93, went home to his Lord and Savior Sunday, May 1, 2022, in Washington. He was born June 9, 1928, in Zurich, Switzerland. He came to the United States in 1950 and married his pen-pal, Ellen Louise Smith, November 18, 1950. They were married for 71 years.
Before retirement, Hans was a senior mechanical engineer at Westinghouse Productivity & Quality Center in Pittsburgh. He received patents and awards for various inventions. After retirement, he worked as a consultant.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Explorers Club of Pittsburgh, and the Odd Fellows. Visitors from all over the world stayed with the Leumann family as guests through Hans’s association with the Pittsburgh Council for International Visitors.
Hans had many interests that kept him busy in life. Designing, remodeling, and building grew into a passion that culminated in the eventual design of his own Swiss chalet home. He enjoyed emailing family and friends and talking with people. He would often entertain them with tales of his life in Switzerland, or the antics of his beloved Corgi, Mickey. He could always be counted on to lend a hand when needed, except for the one day in May that was “his”, Indianapolis 500 race day.
He is survived by his cherished wife, Ellen Louise; daughters, Renee Gramlich (Christopher), Karen Williams (Jerome), and Heidi Osterman (Howard); grandsons, Matthew Williams (Leigh-Anne) and Luke Williams (Lauren); granddaughters, Rosemarie Williams, Megan Gramlich, and Sarah Osterman; and great-grandchildren, Madolyn, Nathaniel, Abigail, Samuel, Ellie, Brianna, Benjamin, and Lyvia; a brother, Rene Leumann, and sister, Rose-Marie Decosterd, both of Switzerland; and several nieces and nephews.
