Walter Reed Gilmore
Walter Reed Gilmore, 93, of Washington, died Sunday, November 13, 2022, in The Washington Hospital.
He was born May 3, 1929, in Lone Pine, eldest son of the late George Gilmore and Romaine Kelly Gilmore.
Mr. Gilmore was a veteran of the Army, serving from March 21, 1951, until his honorable discharge on March 14, 1953, with the rank of Corporal. He was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal – Germany.
For 30 years, Mr. Gilmore worked as a bottler at McWreath’s Dairy. He also worked for Schneider’s Dairy as a truck driver, LW Miller Roofing as a sheet metal bender, and Meadowlands Racetrack as a parking lot collector.
A devoted grandfather, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, who referred to him as “the world’s greatest waffle maker.”
Mr. Gilmore was a member of The Keystone Club and enjoyed dart ball, golfing, bowling and watching sports on television, especially NASCAR. He took great pride in making his famous deviled eggs for family functions, and great pride in maintaining his vehicles and home.
Surviving is his wife of 67 years, Delores Jean Bauer Gilmore; two sons, Dennis (Betty Jane) Gilmore and Brian (Kathy) Gilmore; a daughter, Judith (Dirk) Dreistadt; a brother, George Gilmore, Jr.; a sister, Dolores Durbin; seven grandchildren: Ethan and Sylvia Dreistadt, Cassie (Brennan) Oppman, Brandon Gilmore, Amanda (Ed) Klingensmith, Emily and Danielle Gilmore; five great-grandchildren, Emily, Lukas, Melissa, Gavin and Lizzy, plus one on the way.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, November 16th, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, November 17th, with Pastor Mike Silich officiating.
Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 21st, in The National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil Township. Military rites will be accorded by American Legion, Edwin Scott Linton Post 175.
