On Tuesday, October 4, 2022, our beloved Elizabeth “Betty” Malik Sckena went to her heavenly home.

Betty was a proud coal miner’s daughter from Marianna, born February 21, 1933 to the late John and Anna Bacha Malik.

She was a 1951 graduate of West Bethlehem High School, where she was an honor student and vice president of her senior class.

In 1953 she married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, Louis Sckena. For 37 years they enjoyed a happy life together filled with family, music, travel, gardening and fishing until his death in 1990.

Betty loved her family above all else and was proud of her Slovak heritage. She often shared stories and old family photos with her children and grandchildren.

She loved being outside and always had a deep appreciation of nature and its beauty. She enjoyed star gazing and was thrilled by the sight of every new rainbow and gorgeous sunsets.

Betty lived a simple, but full life being a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandma, great-grandma, aunt and friend. She was known for her love of God, dark chocolate, ice cream and a good book. A faithful Christian, Betty was humble, kind, generous and loved by many.

She will be forever missed by her daughter, LuAnn Sckena Shotter (Renard “Kim”); and her twin sons, Robert and Richard (Pamela) Sckena, who survive. Also surviving are her precious grandchildren, Michael Shotter, Kimberly Mikolay (Bill), Christopher Sckena (Shana), Justin Sckena (fiancee Amelia Gordon, Esquire), Dr. Sarah Sckena and Jacob Sckena; stepgranddaughter, Melynda Girdwood (Joe); great-grandchildren, River and Skylar Mikolay, Rudy, Jett and Ellie Sckena; and stepgreat-grandson, Joseph Girdwood; stepbrother, George Hagedorn (Pattie); and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her infant granddaughter, Amelia Sckena; siblings, John, Mary Ann, Patrick and baby George.

Funeral services are private and under the direction of the John B. Greenlee Funeral Home, Ltd., 2830 Main Street, Beallsville.
