Norma Jean Hadley Sowers

Norma Jean Hadley Sowers, 86, of Washington, passed away Saturday, April 8, 2023, in Hawthorne Woods, Washington.

She was born November 8, 1936, in Sistersville, W.Va., a daughter of the late Alvy and Mary Bellville Hadley. She was raised, however, in South Franklin Township, by Mel and Gerda Deyell.

She was a 1954 graduate of Trinity High School, and went on to work as a nurse’s aide in the nursery at Washington Hospital. She then worked in the service department of John Sisson Motors for 25 years until her retirement.

She enjoyed flower arranging, painting, shopping, going to dances, family vacations to the Outer Banks and hosting family parties.

Her greatest loves in life were God and her family. She was a member of Broad Street Baptist Church, Washington, but attended East Buffalo Presbyterian Church for many years.

On April 17, 1955, in Washington, she married Richard Sowers, who survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Karena (Dennis) Cooke of Avella, Karen (Daniel) Dorgan of Strabane and Kandy (Donnie) Main of Claysville; two grandsons, Kirk Main and Kyler (Cortnei) Main; a great-granddaughter, Kinsley Paige Main; a sister-in-law, Shirley Newman; and several nieces and nephews.

Her father and great-great-grandfather had twin siblings.

Deceased are three sisters, twins – Kathleen “Kitty” Roberts and Eileen Shifflet, and Vera Mills; and a brother, Raymond Hadley, who died in infancy.

The family would like to thank Hawthorne Woods, Visiting Angels and Gateway Hospice, especially Meighan, for their dedicated care of Jean.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, in the Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 13, 2023, with Linda Mankey officiating. Interment will follow in Claysville Cemetery.
