Mildred Ostop
Mildred Ostop, 96, of Monroe, N.C., formerly of Avella, Tuesday evening, February 7, 2023, in Monroe, N.C.
She was born on August 5, 1926 in Bishop, daughter of the late Frank Martin and Mary Golonka Zakulec.
Mrs. Ostop was a 1944 graduate of Hickory High School and worked for Independence Township as Secretary/Treasurer for 45 years, retiring in December 2015, she was also the secretary for the former Independence Township Municipal and Sewage Authority. She was a local registrar for the Bureau of Health Statistics and Registries from 1970 until December 2021, when she officially retired.
Mildred was very involved in the community. She was the former secretary for the Avella PTA and was elected as the first female president. She was a former Girl Scout Leader and dispatcher for the Avella ambulance service.
Mrs. Ostop was a former member of Cross Creek Village Grange and PA State Grange.
She enjoyed spending time with her family and cooking and baking were her favorite hobbies.
She had lived in Avella, on the Heights Hill, from 1955 until she moved to North Carolina to live with her daughter and son-in-law in 2022. Mildred was the last member of her immediate family.
On May 25, 1946 in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Burgettstown, she married Anthony Ostop, who passed away on March 7, 1988.
Surviving Mildred are, two sons, Ronald Ostop of Las Vegas, Nev., Robert Ostop of Queen Creek, Ariz.; a daughter, MaryEllen (William) McIntyre of Monroe, N.C.; three grandchildren, Melynda (Jason) Morris, Robert Ostop and Michelle (David) Hickman; four great-grandchildren, Connor Michael Hickman, Payton Morris, Alex Morris and Skyler Ostop.
Deceased in addition to her husband and parents are, three brothers, Stanley, Walter and Frank Zakulec; two sisters, Jennie Zyla and Lottie Laurich; and a daughter-in-law, Marilyn Ostop.
Friends and family will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, February 12, in the Jerome A. Stefkovich Funeral Home, Inc., located at 18 Campbell Street, Avella, PA 15312.
Funeral service and burial are private.
Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Avella.
