Melvin Duane Shoup
Melvin “Mel” Duane Shoup, 80, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus, Tuesday, February 14, 2023, in his home, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born January 28, 1943, in Canonsburg, a son of the late Melvin H. and Grace Larkin Shoup.
A 1960 graduate of Trinity High School, he was a member of Christian Bible Fellowship, where he served as an elder for many years.
Mel worked for IGS (Industrial Gasket and Shim) in Meadowlands for 49 years. He served on its board as secretary, and retired as plant manager.
Mel and his wife, Carolyn, owned and operated Fairview Valley Retirement Home, in Deemston Borough, from 1990 to 2001.
He served on the Release Time Bible Program of Washington County Board. Mel was a counselor for the RTBP summer camps held at Jumonville and Camp Cornerstone, where he instructed hundreds of campers in archery and air rifle safety. He was also a board member of CBM of SWPA (Camp Cornerstone) for many years.
An avid hunter his entire life, he shared the great outdoors in the Allegheny National Forest with numerous people, inviting them to the cabins he shared with other members. He had a lifetime hobby of Lionel trains, and participated in the Train Gang in Washington. Mel had a love of photography, and was a member of the Washington Camera Club. A classic car enthusiast, he loved his 1958 Chevy Impala, and did a frame-up restore of his 1964 Chevy Impala SS. Above all, he loved spending time with family and friends.
On March 18, 1964, he married Carolyn L. Simpson, who survives.
Also surviving are their sons, Todd Duane (Robin) Shoup and Eric Edward (Tammy) Shoup, both of Washington; along with 11 grandchildren, Brooklyn (Shawn) Hughes-Ankrom, Hudson (Casey), Keely (fiance Shane), Lexi, Fallyn, Zechariah (Britney), Noah, Rebekah and Terah Shoup, Jarred Lilley, and Katie (James) Rohde; and three great-grandchildren, Preston Isaiah, Aurora Lynn, and Lucy Grace; and two nieces.
Deceased is a sister, Carol (Terry – surviving) Shrontz.
Family and friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, February 17, in Christian Bible Fellowship, 15 Middle Way, Washington, where additional visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., the time of service, Saturday, February 18, with Pastor James Meyers officiating.
Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray.
