Irene Strawn Jones

Irene Strawn Jones, 97, of Waynesburg, Pa., formerly of Spraggs, died at 7:17 a.m. Sunday, January 1, 2023, in the Evergreen Assisted Living in Waynesburg, Pa.

She was born Wednesday, February 4, 1925 in Waynesburg a daughter of the late Reed J. Strawn and Alice McCullough Strawn.

Mrs. Jones was a member of the Spraggs United Methodist Church. She had served on the church board and when her health permitted was active in the kitchen and serving dinners. She was a graduate of the former Margaret Bell High School class of 1944. Following high school graduation she went to work for South Penn Telephone in Waynesburg as an operator for two years. She was then a homemaker for several years before going to work in 1960 for Central Greene School District at the Spraggs Elementary School as a cook in the cafeteria, retiring in 1987. Irene loved spending time with family, friends, and neighbors. She enjoyed working in the yard, baking and especially square dancing.

Her husband of 68 years, Thomas Wilson Jones, whom she married on June 7, 1945 died October 24, 2013.

Irene was the proud mother of two sons, Thomas W. (Renee) Jones, of Spraggs, Pa., and Guy R. (Reta) Jones, of Waynesburg; five grandchildren, Randy (Marsha) Jones, Candy (Will) Reiner, Nicole (Scott) Shriver, Chris (Rebecca) Jones, Amanda Jones; seven great-grand-child- ren, Thomas Jones, Rylee Jones, Bryon Shriver, Kylia Shriver, Greyson Jones, Tristan Jones, and Colby Bigelow; a great-great- grandson, Wesley Jones; and several nieces and nephews. Irene was the last of her immediate family.

Deceased are four brothers, twins James Strawn and William R. Strawn, Clarence H. Strawn, and Carl E. Strawn.

Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, January 5, 2023 in the Milliken and Throckmorton Funeral Home, Inc. Daryl L. Throckmorton Owner/Director, 197 N. Maiden St., Waynesburg, PA 15370, where services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, January 6, with Rev. Kathy Higgins officiating.

Burial will be in Greene County Memorial Park, Waynesburg, PA. Information at www.milliken-throckmortonfh.com.
