Larry E. Matus
Larry E. Matus, 81, of Fallowfield Township, formerly of Monongahela and Bentleyville, died Saturday, January 7, 2023, in Penn Highlands Mon Valley Hospital. He was born October 6, 1941, a son of Andy and Mary Ann Kevech Matus.
Larry was a 1959 graduate of Monongahela High School and a member of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary Orthodox Church in Monongahela.
He retired from US Steel, Maple Creek Mine with nearly 40 years of employment.
In 1984, Larry founded the NuTones polka band and they played throughout the East coast. He liked spending his time attending polka events and playing the Concertina.
He enjoyed hunting, gardening, cutting the grass and operating heavy equipment. Larry loved family gatherings, especially Sunday Steeler games.
He is survived by his wife, Lois “Gug” Gondak Matus, with whom he celebrated 62 years of marriage June 11, 2022; two daughters, Stacey (Dave) Morris and Vicki (Richie) Zebrowski, all of Monongahela; five grandchildren, Dana (Ryan) Salotti, Kala (Matt) Porter, Brandon, Travis, and Randi Zebrowski; three great-granddaughters, Mila and Alina Porter, and Bria Salotti; sister, Mary Carol Matus of Lawrence; and brother-in-law, Ed Brown of Monongahela.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Martha Matus Brown.
Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, January 10, in the Frye Funeral Home Inc., 427 West Main Street, Monongahela. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 11, in the Nativity of the Virgin Mary Orthodox Church, with the Rev. Stephan Gresh officiating. Interment will follow in Monongahela Cemetery. A panachida service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday evening, in the funeral home.
