Elizabeth J. “Betty” Herron, 88, of McMurray, formerly of Canonsburg, passed away peacefully, Monday, June 5, 2023, with family by her side.

She was born October 4, 1934, in Natrona Heights, a daughter of the late Steven and Pauline Plazak.

Preceding her in death are her beloved husband, Dr. James T. Herron, Sr.; her brother, Private First Class, Paratrooper of the US Army, John F. Plazak; and her sister, Ann McIlroy.

Betty was a loving and kind woman who saw the best in everyone and spent much of her time caring for others by donating her time and kind nature to various charitable endeavors.

She was a devoted member of Saint Patrick Church, where she worked tirelessly volunteering as a Eucharistic Minister, in the rectory office, the school cafeteria, knitting for the blanket ministry, working the annual summer festival and cooking and serving at numerous fish fries.

Betty was a member of the Christian Mothers and Guild, served food at the Jubilee Kitchen in Pittsburgh, visited shut-ins, and delivered communion to various nursing homes.

She volunteered at Children’s Hospital, holding and nurturing sick infants; and at Canonsburg Hospital, visiting older patients, bringing cheer and small gifts, and supplied desserts to Meals-On- Wheels for 10 years.

Betty is survived by her brother and best friend, Joseph A. Plazak; and her loving sister, Helen M. Henry; her five devoted nieces, she held so dearly in her heart: Debbie (Larry) Wozniak, Linda (Randy) Long, Cathy (Kevin) Masson, Patty (Tim) Hartzell and Karen (Ray) DiCaprio; her much loved grandson, John (Melissa) Herron Jr.; and great-grandson, Zachary; her great-nieces and nephews: Sean, Allison, Ryan and Amber; and great-great nieces and nephew: Brianna, Katelyn, Jillian and Grayson.

Friends and family are welcome from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 8, 2023, in SALANDRA FUNERAL and CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday in Saint Oscar Romero Parish, Saint Patrick Church, 317 West Pike Street, Canonsburg. Interment will follow in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Peters Township.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to St. Jude Research Hospital or the Make A Wish Foundation of Western PA.
