Allan A. Zimmerman

Allan A. Zimmerman, 82, of Hickory, departed this life for another on Saturday, June 24, 2023 in the Donnell House, Washington.

He was born on December 4, 1940 in Homestead the first son of the late Andrew and Mary Kovalcik Zimmerman.

Allan’s childhood was spent in Bethel Park until 5th grade when his family moved to the Kovalcik farm and then eventually settled in Woodrow (Rea) where he attended Hickory High School, graduating in 1958.

Mr. Zimmerman was a hard worker all his life; starting his career in construction and building electrical power lines with Day and Zimmerman and ending with Sargent Electric, where he retired as a Journeyman/Operator in May 2003.

Mr. Zimmerman was married to Thelma J. Alrutz on March 7, 1968 in California, PA, by the late Rev. John Rankin. Mrs. Zimmerman predeceased her husband on June 24, 2015 after 47 years of marriage.

He was a faithful member of First Lutheran Church in Washington and a former church council member for many years.

In addition to serving his church Allan was a lifetime member of Mt. Pleasant Twp. Fire Department. He also assisted in any way before and during the annual Apple Festival.

Allan was a 32nd Degree Mason, belonging to the Richard Vaux Lodge 454 of Burgettstown and the Syria Shrine Washington-Greene Caravan #2 for many years and served as past president of the Caravan.

In addition, Mr. Zimmerman was a member of the Hickory Lions Club, where he was presented the highest honor of the Melvin Jones Award. He was a lifetime member of the IBEW – International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union.

In his early years he helped coach youth baseball and enjoyed golfing as well as bowling in a league at Polar Star.

Allan enjoyed sports having played football and basketball in high school. He was a huge Steeler fan/fanatic, holding season tickets for 35 years and attending the Washington Wild Things games for several seasons.

His recent pastimes were spent watching sports, doing wordsearch books and being as active as he could in his many organizations, especially the shrine.

Allan’s family will miss the many traditional holiday dinners he and Thelma hosted together.

Mr. Zimmerman is survived by, his step-daughter, Patricia (Ray) Platts of Scenery Hill; their children, Mark Allan (Liz) Platts and Ray Platts Jr.; his step-son, Kenneth E. (Kellylee) Alrutz of New York; and their children, Rikki and Graham Alrutz; five step-great grandchildren; a brother, whom he was very close to, Larry D. Zimmerman and his niece, Lori (Brad) Chase both of Texas; also, numerous cousins and many friends.

Friends and family will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 28, in the Jerome A. Stefkovich Funeral Home Inc., 18 Campbell Street, Avella, PA 15312, where a Masonic service will be held Wednesday. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home at 11 a.m., on Thursday, June 29, with The Reverend Robert Grewe officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Prospect Cemetery, Hickory.
