After 88 years, the Lord was finally ready for her, calling Nancy Hoyt Gregg home in the early morning hours of Wednesday, June 28, 2023. At the time of her passing, she was a resident of Personal Care at Evergreen, having spent more than 80 years of her life within a ten-block radius of where she was born.

Born Feb. 2, 1935 a daughter of the late Byron L. and Violet Finnell Hoyt, she attended Washington schools until her mother’s declining health led her to provide round-the-clock care in the family home.

A member of Fairhill Manor Christian Church at the time of her passing, Nancy was previously a member of First Baptist Church, Washington, singing in the choirs of both churches. She was also a member of Eastern Star #404. While never graduating from Washington High School, she appreciated her classmates recognizing the special circumstances and including her in reunions through the rest of her life.

On October 27, 1951, in Washington, she married William F. Gregg, who passed away May 19, 1994. The couple was blessed with five sons over their more than 40-year marriage, all of whom survive: Donald W. & Rosemary Gregg of Harwick, Thomas & Cynthia Gregg of Rostraver, Edward L.& Susan Gregg of Columbia, Md. Robert S. Gregg of Washington; and James (the late Brenda) Gregg of Amsterdam, NY. She is also survived by Betty Lou Gordon of Washington, a cousin who was the sister neither ever had growing up, as well as first cousins William (Dianne Moore) Hoyt of Washington and Michael (Sally) Hoyt of Alabama.

Mrs. Gregg worked for Wal-Mart and JoAnn Fabrics, and drove client van for PARC (now ARC-Washington). For nearly 30 years, Mrs. Gregg drove school bus for G.G.& C. Bus where she thoroughly enjoyed the nickname “Witchiepoo,” courtesy of many members of the Wash High Band.

Also left to cherish the memory of Grandma’s many stories are grandchildren, some by birth, some by marriage: Ryan (Christie) Petri, Tiverton, RI; Jason Petri, Pittsburgh; Justin (Kimberly) Petri, Monroeville; Ashley (Brian) Grimm, York, PA; Thomas Gregg Jr., Milwaukee, WI; Christina Lynn Gregg, Hyattsville, MD; Angela Bassich, Washington; Andrew Gregg, Martins Ferry, OH; Randy (Tara) Gregg, Cape Girardeau, MO; James Gregg, Cape Girardeau, MO; along with more than 10 greatgrandchildren and one great-great- grandson. Nieces, nephews and generations of cousins far too many to count also survive.

Mrs. Gregg enjoyed tremendous friendships during her years living at the Thomas Campbell Apartments in Washington until the apartment complex fire in 2021. She then received outstanding care and support from everyone at Personal Care at Evergreen, and was lovingly cared for in her final months thanks to the incredible staff at Gateway Hospice, including Meighan Grice, Rev. Sue Petritis, Jenn Celedonia, Vesta Greaves and Pastor JudeUrso.

Mrs. Gregg was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a sister, Barbara Ellen who died in infancy, a great- grandson, Samuel Grimm; niece, Carol Mast Malone; and nephew, Richard Mast.

Friends will be received from 12 noon to 3 p.m. Sunday in the Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at that time with Rev. Sue Petritis officiating. Burial in Washington Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family.
