Mary Martha Povich Jennings
Mary Martha Povich Jennings, known as “Martha”, of Phoenix, Ariz., passed away peacefully Wednesday, October 18, 2023.
She was born August 28, 1934, in Canonsburg, a daughter of the late Michael and Helen Harajbich Povich.
Left behind to cherish her memory are her children, Edward Jennings and wife Peggy of Denver, Colo., and Joyce Hunt and husband David of Peninsula, Ohio; grandchildren, Michael Kostic and wife Hannah, Christopher Kostic and wife Alice, Sarah Weis and husband Brandon of Ohio, Edward Jennings, Jonathan Jennings and wife Katelynn of Colo.; great-grandchildren, Abby Weis, Jessie Weis, Riley Weis, Roczen Weis, Hans Weis, Arvin Weis of Ohio, Oliva Jennings of Colo., Blair Kostic of Ohio, James King, Jackie King and Adrian Dishong of Ohio.
Deceased, in addition to her parents, are her late husband, Edward Marsh Jennings of Washington; brothers, Michael Povich Jr., Staff Sargent George Povich and John Povich; and sisters, Irene Sobczak and Dorothy Petronka.
Martha was a graduate of Canonsburg High School, Class of 1952, and of Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsburgh, Class of 1955.
She started her career as a registered nurse at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh and then at Aliquippa Hospital. Martha retired from Banner Desert Samaritan Surgical Center in Mesa, Ariz., at the age of 80.
Martha was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Phoenix, Ariz., where she attended numerous women’s Bible studies. She enjoyed exercising on her treadmill, cooking, dining out, and visiting with her children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren.
She had a positive attitude and a warm smile. She was a constant source of support for her children, offering guidance and modeling kindness and generosity.
Friends an family are welcome from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, October 27, in Salandra Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc., Joseph P. Salandra LFD, owner / supervisor, 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg (724-745-8120), where departing prayers will be recited at 9:35 a.m. Saturday, October 28. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in St. Oscar Romero Parish St. Patrick Church, 317 West Pike Street, Canonsburg. Private interment will be in Washington Cemetery.
