Charles J. Profrock
Charles J. Profrock, of St. Augustine, Fla., passed away Monday, August 28, 2023.
Chuck’s career spanned nearly 60 years, four continents and three wives. His first business was well named, Vagabond Photography. The first part of his career was spent living in Barcelona with his first wife, Carmen as a stringer correspondent for magazines such as Paris Match, Road & Track, Photo Play and many others. He also worked for American Export Lines as a ship’s photographer making 27 trans-Atlantic crossings and photographed such luminaries of the ’60s as Ernest Borgnine, Ava Gardner, Elizabeth Taylor and Eddie Fisher.
In the ’70s he worked in New York, where he met and married his second wife, Terri and worked for Photo Trends and in Philadelphia for Tom Meehan Studios and Gimbels Department Store.
In the ’80s and part of the ’90s he settled down in Washington with his third wife, Terry – yes, same name, different girl – where Vagabond Photography grew into VIDSCO Inc., a home movie and photo transfer studio with a 150-dealer network over eight states.
In 1993, Chuck and Terry decided to move towards warmer weather to St. Augustine and Chuck picked up a camera again. With such a rich history and a wealth of beautiful buildings, Chuck came back to his one true profession. So with a camera in his hand and an image in his eye he began working for the Historical Society and many others. He reached the penultimate of his career with a photograph being published in National Geographic.
Chuck is survived by his wife of 43 years, Theresa O’Brien Profrock; his daughter, Carmen (Jerry) Young; two sons, Brian (Roz) and Mark; his second wife, Theresa (Martin) Kohut, the mother of two of his sons and a granddaughter, Kayle.
He was predeceased by his parents, Ronald and Marion; a brother, Ronald (Roz); his oldest son, Christopher; and his first wife, Carmen Suarez Heinrich.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to t2t.org, Stjude.org or an organization of one’s choosing.
Burial will be private.
