James E. Held

James E. Held, 79, of Bulger passed away peacefully on Thursday September 14, 2023 in his home with his loving family by his side.

He was born on October 19, 1943 in Akron, Ohio, a son of the late August and Vivian Eleanor Dewey Held and was raised in Circleville, Ohio until the 8th grade before moving to Cambridge, Ohio. He graduated from Cambridge High School in 1962 where he ran track and played football.

After high school he attended Tri State University in Angola, Ind., where he graduated with a degree in Drafting.

A Veteran of the United States Army, he was stationed in Oakdale for 3 years where he was a member of the sharp shooting pistol team which traveled the country. After being honorably discharged from the service, he married Margaret “Peggy” Pendeville Held on April 25, 1970 and they made their first home in Midway.

While working for Herbrick & Held and Smith Paint Co., he attended the University of Pittsburgh at night before transferring and graduating from Point Park College. Jim then took a job as a salesman with Team, Inc., for 21 years before being employed in the lab at Climax Molybdenum in Langeloth until his retirement in 2018.

Never missing any of his daughters’ dance recitals or activities, he enjoyed woodworking and building anything needed for the Burgettstown Homecoming and High School Musicals.

He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes R.C. Church where he served as a lector and helped with Bingo.

Surviving in addition to his wife Peggy; are his two daughters, Michele Renee Scuro and husband Patrick of Coraopolis and Molly Marie Held and husband David Dollins of Ingram; his two adored granddaughters, Gia Marie and Tessa Lynn Scuro; his brother, Gary Lee Held of Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Monica Lynn Held on August 23, 2010 and James Denman.

Family and friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. on Monday Sept. 18, in Slater Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc. of Burgettstown, 73 Highland Avenue, Burgettstown, PA 15021 where departing prayers will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday Sept. 19, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial Celebrated by Fr. David Perry will begin at 11 a.m. on Tuesday in Our Lady of Lourdes Church of St. Isidore the Farmer Parish, Burgettstown. Interment will follow in the Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his memory to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.act.alz.org.
