Walter Gregory “Greg” Chwala, 67, of Paris, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, September 20, 2023, in his home. He was born March 18, 1956, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Walter Kasper and Viola Mae Cook Chwala.

He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 20 years, Carol Jane Alkire Chwala (March 2019).

Greg was an active member and very involved in Paris Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of McDonald Rod and Gun Club. Some may remember Greg as a Cub Scout Leader of Pack 1394 in McDonald for five years. Greg was an avid runner and walker. He could be seen often on Devils Den Road and Paris-Colliers Road, waving at everyone who passed by. Greg was a Steelers fan and loved listening to music.

Greg worked for 38 years at Covestro, formerly Bayer, as a HSEQ rep, before retiring in 2018.

His true passion was the outdoors. Greg loved kayaking, fishing and biking, especially at his camp purchased in 2019 on the Allegheny River in Tidioute. He loved traveling to Florida every year with Carol and many fishing trips to Alaska with his friend, Burk.

Greg was also a religious man, who became strong in faith later in his life, mostly attributed to many prayers for him from Carol and his pastor and good friend, Tina.

Greg will be deeply missed by his daughter, Suzanne Holt (Steven) of Clinton; son, Gregory Luke Chwala (James Henderson) of Cincinnati, Ohio; stepdaughters, Candie Cook (Cheryl Sowers) of Coraopolis, and Amy Nicole Eperthener (Michael) of Chester, W.Va.; stepson, James Burdette (Angie) of Lakeland, Fla.; “Pappy” to Tristan Douglas Holt and Izabella Marie Holt; grandchildren, Justin, Jordan, Kiersten and Travis; and great- grandchildren, Sophia, Ayden, Jack, Teagan and Arabella; sisters, Janet Louise MacFarland (James) of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Marianne Chwala of Washington; uncle, Donald Cook of McDonald; mother of his children, Dorothy Marie Thiry Cook; good friends, Burk and Sophie Villee, and Tina Hosler; several nieces, nephews and cousins; many friends from Florida and Tidioute; and of course his beloved four-legged family, Otis and Lulu, all of whom will truly miss Greg.

Visitation will take place from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, September 24, in Steel & Wolfe Funeral Home, 380 Penco Road, Weirton, W.Va., where the funeral will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, September 25, with Greg’s good friend, the Rev. Dr. Christina Hosler presiding. Interment will follow at Chestnut Ridge Cemetery, Florence.
