Teachers remembered

1 min read

As Christmas 2012 is nearly upon us, we pause to remember those who are no longer with us to enjoy the celebration. My memories drift back to the 1950s and the small elementary school I once attended in Hickory.

There were Christmas concerts, decorated trees in each of the classrooms, holiday parties, a “grab bag” where the most that could be spent was 25 cents and seasonal symbols stenciled neatly on the classroom windows.

But most of all, I remember the teachers.

The elementary teachers have all departed this life, but memories of their kindness and generosity to the students entrusted to their care remain: Minnie Cooke, Della Colwes, Virginia Caldwell, Marthetta McCarrell, Millicent Harriott, Beatrice Miller, Ed Wood and Elbert Davis.

May these teachers as well as those who are no longer with us be remembered this Christmas.
