Time to face reality

1 min read

Although the state Supreme Court Tuesday tersely cut down the last attempt by the Washington County commissioners to forestall property reassessment, the commissioners haven’t surrendered quite yet. They plan to meet with their solicitors to see if anything can be done to drag out their legal fight a little longer.

It should be noted that among the few duties of the commissioners is to determine how county residents are taxed, and to ensure that they are taxed fairly and equitably. For the past five years, the board has been fighting through the courts to avoid performing that duty.

It’s about time commissioners turn their attention to making sure reassessment is efficient and fair, rather than spending any more on legal fees avoiding the inevitable.
