Long live the Coal Show
There was a time, not so long ago, when coal was then undisputed king in Greene County.
Then came the gas drillers and now it seems coal has taken a back seat in the energy industry.
But the King Coal Association will be going all out next week to remind everyone within shouting distance of Carmichaels – the site of the Pennsylvania Bituminous Coal Show – that coal, and coal mining, is not going away anytime soon.
The week-long festival, which gets into full swing Sunday, will again feature a Coal Queen pageant, live bands, a pet parade, a bike parade, a car show, food and carnival rides. And yes, there will be events that actually pertain to the coal industry.
There will be mine rescue teams from area coal mines competing against the clock in a roped-off area on the Carmichaels Area football field.
This will be the 60th year the King Coal Association has organized the Coal Show and we have no doubt it will continue for many years to come.
