Look out for students

1 min read

Today is the first day of school for students in three of five Greene County school districts and eight of the 14 in Washington County. Students in three school districts began classes last week; two districts begin tomorrow, followed by two Wednesday and one Thursday.

There have been smiles on many parents’ faces and probably a few tears from youngsters who don’t, or didn’t, want to let go of their summer vacation memories or who are, or were, leaving the nest for the first time to enter kindergarten or first grade.

Our purpose here, however, is to remind motorists kids will be standing on corners waiting for buses or crossing in front of them, sometimes without looking.

There are strict school bus laws and drivers should become familiar with them, and parents should impress upon their children to also be diligent and pay attention when getting on and off school buses.

If everyone obeys the rules, the start of school should be happy, not tragic.
