No problem, call me “hon”

2 min read

To date, there have been three letters to the editor from disgruntled people who find it offensive to be called “hon” or by their first names when checking out at any type of retail store.

This took me by surprise. More often than I’d like it to happen, clerks in stores project an attitude that it’s a bother to wait on me and take my money – money that ultimately pays their wages. I usually offer a smile and say hello when I approach the counter, where, at times, I’m greeted with silence and a look of disgust. Following the transaction, where a “thank you” would be proper etiquette, dead silence reigns again.

Ring a bell with anyone? These clerks soil the reputation of a business and I prefer not to patronize places where this occurs.

Clerks who call me or anyone else “hon,” or use our names, are merely trying to let us know it was a pleasure to wait on us. This is a kind gesture and to interpret it as anything but requires introspection. Accompanying their words are usually smiles. To chastise these folks who are attempting to make our shopping experience more personable and appreciative is unconscionable in an era where we so often hear comments regarding the rudeness of today’s youth and adults and the demise of a courteous society in general.

So, please, bring it on clerks!

I appreciate it when you strive to help us, your resolve when facing disgruntled customers and your eagerness to personalize our shopping experiences when you’re probably working long hours without any benefits.
