More low-income housing needed

1 min read

Greene County officially transferred the management of Whitehill Place, the transitional housing apartments in Waynesburg, to Connect Inc., a social services agency that handles low-income housing.

The construction of six single-occupancy apartments for individuals left temporarily homeless was spearheaded by Greene County’s human services department. But it would not have become a reality without considerable funding efforts through a combination of public and private sources.

But now that the housing unit is being managed by the appropriate agency, it is time for the county to get focused on establishing more housing, which is something the commissioners and county agency directors recognize as paramount.

Recently, the county received an $800,000 grant from the federal government to put toward planned improvements at the county airport. It is a project we heartily support. But, at the same time, we would like to see our federal and state representatives come before the board of commissioners with a check earmarked for housing construction.

That, too, will be something we will eagerly support.
