Unearthing artifacts from day before last
The borough of McDonald marks its 125th anniversary this year, and as part of its celebration a time capsule recently unearthed will be opened at 7 p.m. today.
The capsule does not contain items from the time of the borough’s founding in 1889, however; it was buried in 1989 as part of McDonald’s centennial celebration.
For young people, 25 years is an awfully long time. The year 1989 must seem unimaginably distant to them: a time when cellphones were rare, hardly anyone knew about the Internet and George W. Bush’s father was president.
To older people, 1989 seems like the day before yesterday. Chance are, some of the members of the centennial committee are quite alive today and well remember exactly what they placed in that time capsule.
If those members are like some of us, they probably have suits and shoes in their closets that predate 1989.
If you’re part of the older crowd, you know 25 years is not such a long time.
It’s probably the same length of time you’ve been promising to give the garage a good cleaning.
