Almost heaven? Maybe not

1 min read

The grass is always greener on the other side? Apparently not to our West and South.

Once again, West Virginia won – if you can call it that – the designation of being the most miserable state in the country, as per the latest Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index.

In fact, it’s been down in the dumps ever since the survey was launched in 2008, having finished either last or next-to-last every time, exchanging that spot with Kentucky.

Almost heaven, as the song says? Maybe not.

Among the markers used in the survey to determine well-being are rates of smoking and obesity, the number of sick days used, access to food and shelter and an “emotional health index.”

West Virginia has a ways to go to match what the survey said are the happiest states in the union, which are Hawaii and Utah.

We wish them well in that climb.
