Low voter turnout explanation

1 min read

We think Pam Snyder put forth a plausible explanation when addressing the low voter turnout in last Tuesday’s primary.

One thing she didn’t mention was the all-too-familiar catchword: apathy. Cnsidering the turnout figures from both Washington and Greene counties, it’s hard not to offer up apathy as an explanation.

Yet Snyder, who was running unopposed on the Democratic ballot for her second term in the 50th Legislative District, and will again be unopposed in the fall, avoided saying the word, but she did say she understood why voters often get turned off by politicians. All the commercials, mailings and phone calls drive people crazy, she said. Does that generate apathy? Perhaps.

But then she countered by asking, how else is a candidate to get his or message out? It’s a Catch-22, she said. And we agree.

So, unless the process is changed and political candidates find a different way to get their messages across, we are afraid not much will change on Election Night.
