Has politics prevented an arrest?

2 min read

In response to Desetta Palmer’s Oct. 9 letter to the editor concerning state Sen. Tim Solobay, I would like to say I do not know the reason the Observer-Reporter published the article titled, “Solobay was questioned in 2011 about his relationship with murder victim’s wife,” concerning an unsolved murder. But I believe in doing so, it can be very beneficial toward hopefully solving this mystery by bringing it forward again for public scrutiny.

Let us not forget this is not about an election, but about a young, innocent victim. James L. Durbin, a married man, a father and a son, was shot in the back of his head. He was murdered in cowardly fashion while inside his home. Solobay was questioned, according to court documents, about his relationship with Durbin’s wife. Palmer should understand that proves the article was not based on unfounded information. These are public, unsealed records anyone can go to the Washington County Courthouse and request to see. I believe the newspaper went easy on Solobay. I would have published the entire document for everyone to read.

The district attorney’s office claimed to have had a suspect for three years, so I believe they need to continue doing their job by working diligently to resolve this murder, thereby putting to rest all the rumors and innuendo through an arrest.

From what I have been reading lately in the Observer-Reporter, Washington County’s district attorney, Gene Vittone, is experiencing some difficulty handling his job. I have to question, from viewing what was recently released about a three-year unsolved murder, whether politics stood in the way of Vittone making an arrest in the murder of James Durbin?
