Library deserves a secure future

2 min read

During a recent trip to my hometown, I visited the Chartiers-Houston Community Library.

While there, I observed children with their parents excitedly looking for the next book they wanted to read. Adults were using the computers to research a topic of interest. Conversation was flowing between library patrons and the staff. In the large meeting room, a group of published authors discussed the importance of libraries to those who write.

In other words, there was a lot going on and it was all good.

In the recent past, this library, like many others, has faced an uncertain funding future. Not willing to see this vital community asset diminished or lost entirely, volunteer library director William Hill has rallied staff and community support. Significant donations have resulted.

Sounds good, right? Yes, this cash infusion affirms the importance of this library to this small and tight-knit community. However, the need for a steady source of funding requires passage of a tiny tax levy on the November ballot. This is the first time that this library has sought any form of tax revenue and it does so reluctantly now. This library has great value and deserves a secure future. Please vote for the tax needed to support it.
