West Virginia no example to Pennsylvania on hunting

1 min read

George Block’s column on Aug. 31 was misleading regarding Sunday hunting in West Virginia.

Block states that Sunday hunting is permitted in West Virginia, but he doesn’t give the whole story. While West Virginia has a law permitting Sunday hunting, it must be approved by a voter referendum on a county-by-county basis. According to West Virginia’s Department of Natural Resources website, only 19 of 55 counties have approved Sunday hunting, and those approvals permit Sunday hunting only on private lands. A June news listed the counties participating in Sunday hunting as Boone, Braxton, Brooke, Calhoun, Clay, Hancock, Jefferson, Lincoln, Logan, McDowell, Marshall, Mingo, Nicholas, Ohio, Wayne, Webster, Wirt, Wetzel, and Wyoming.

I would suggest that Block contact the county clerk in each of those counties to determine how well the program is being received locally and before attempting to use the existence of the West Virginia program as justification for changing the long-standing Pennsylvania program.
