“Sound of Music” is a classic
I am writing in response to a commentary from the New York Times‘ Lawrence Downes that appeared in the April 5 edition of the Observer-Reporter regarding the 50th anniversary of the movie “The Sound of Music.”
Did Downes watch the same “Sound of Music” I have watched? Why does he believe it needs to be remade? There was a new version that aired on NBC-TV in December 2013, which fell flat for me.
Downes’ comment on how the movie is a “bedrock memory” for him is the only thing in the article worth repeating.
I grew up watching “The Sound of Music,” as did my children, and now I watch it with my grandchildren. They enjoy the music, and I hear them singing some of the songs days later.
The movie is definitely a classic and something to be enjoyed by the whole family, unlike some movies that are now in theaters. Since this movie classic has held up for decades, to question its impact is short-sighted at best.
