Taxpayers are losers in Brady case

2 min read

It is difficult to imagine a more gross and outlandish abuse of the federal court system than the upcoming proceeding in which the National Football League will face off against the New England Patriots’ quarterback Tom Brady and the NFL players union.

Brady has been shown to be a cheater and a liar, someone who should have difficulty showing his face in public. But in our society, cheaters and liars are shameless. If they can bamboozle a judge or jury, they can come out of court smelling like a rose.

It is tragically comic that when he commented on Brady’s four-game suspension being upheld, Brady’s attorney asserted that Roger Goodell, the NFL commissioner, is attempting to “alter the competitive balance of the upcoming season.” Certainly, Brady and the Patriots would never think of doing anything like that themselves!

The Patriots, apparently with a straight face, have asserted that the suspension is an effort to “destroy the reputation” of Brady. This is shooting the messenger, as any loss of reputation is the fault of the perpetrator.

It is regrettable that the court will be tied up hearing this nonsensical case, and punitive damages may not be levied against the party that loses. This case should have ended with an appropriate suspension. The taxpaying saps, the bottomless source of revenue, will be tapped again. Outrageous.
