Trump supporters shouldn’t be dismissed

2 min read

Two weeks ago, the Observer-Reporter ran two editorials on the presidential candidacy of Donald Trump, and I must say I thought them very condescending, particularly the July 24th attack on his supporters. The editorial summoned images of “bitter, middle-aged white men who spend all their free time writing venomous and anonymous online posts.” I think the writer of that editorial could give such men lessons.

I doubt that I would vote for Trump or for Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, but I am at least willing to appreciate why many people are showing enthusiasm for these men. Contrary to the Observer-Reporter‘s view, I think people have enough intelligence to know that things are not well, that the economy is sluggish, the nation has deep divisions and, around the world, the forces of fanaticism, barbarism and authoritarianism seem to be on the march. Mainstream politicians look like an uninspiring lot. Many think the system is in need of a major shaking up, and Trump and Sanders are the ones promising to do just that. That is the reason they draw excited crowds.

Whether or not Trump or Sanders could actually work such a miracle is another story. But I lost respect for the Observer-Reporter with its viewpoint that, “Oh, those people are just so stupid!”
