Clean up the ramps

2 min read

Washington is a city known for our advantageous location, at the intersection of interstates 70 and 79. It’s a great location where weary road warriors can stop to eat, shop, or rest. We have numerous entrance and exit ramps that invite travelers to pause on their journeys and visit Washington. Having said that, has anyone else noticed the condition of those ramps lately? I’m not talking about pot holes; I’m talking about the acres and acres of trash, illegally-posted signs and chest-high weeds. What a horrible welcome to Washington.

Driving these roads every day, it’s easy to grow numb to the conditions. All Washington residents should slow down a moment and take note of the welcome an outsider would have to our area. They may get lucky and glimpse a single wildflower or two beneath the mountains of trash and signs.

As our profile grows with the continued development of Route 19, Racetrack Road and Southpointe, I think its time we start taking more pride and better care of these important areas. After all, it’s the first thing and last thing a visitor sees of Washington. Aren’t those the two most important impressions there are?

Am I alone in feeling that we shouldn’t have to rely on volunteers, road crews and businesses to clean up our entrance and exit ramps once or twice a year? I would like to see multiple clean-up crews from the county jail hitting these areas every single week with trash bags and weed eaters. The supervision required would be money well spent.
