Support Peters Meals on Wheels
On Dec. 7, I attended the Peters Township Council meeting along with 50 or so other volunteers who work with or support Peters Township Meal on Wheels (MOW). I have delivered meals with a friend of mine every other Thursday for the last five years. When I was informed that the lease for the space Meals On Wheels uses was not being renewed by the township, I wanted to attend the meeting to show my support for this very valuable organization.
Delivering meals has become a priority for me. On behalf of Meals on Wheels, my friend and I deliver hot, nutritious meals, soup, sandwiches and a beverage. What we also deliver is the occasional newspaper that is in the driveway and conversation. We have learned what our clients did for a living. We are often asked to sit down and have a cup of coffee. At times, we listen and shed tears together as a client mourns the loss of a spouse or a child.
It is true that Meals on Wheels is a vital service provided inside and outside Peters Township. It is also true, as a Peters Township councilman stated last week, that the township has a fiduciary responsibility to all township residents. I do not have the answer to this situation, but I simply cannot imagine the loss these wonderful clients will experience if volunteers from Meals on Wheels are no longer able to provide them with a hot meal, a warm smile, companionship and a little bit of time out of our otherwise busy days.
