Think more, kill less
What a shame to hear about the controversy about lowering the deer population in Mt. Lebanon.
How inhumane and cruel it would be to lure animals into a pen to kill them for an exorbitant fee. The easier solution would be to lure them into that same pen, then into a truck, and move them to an area where the population of deer is not a problem.
We are blessed in this state to have many wilderness areas like the Allegheny National Forest and large tracts of state game lands where these deer could live out their lives. Many hunters will tell you that the deer population in these areas has decreased at an alarming rate in the past years and that these same areas would benefit from an influx of new deer to strengthen their numbers.
The preservation of the manicured lawns of people of a higher economic class is no reason to kill gentle creatures. In our family, we are hunters and have been all our lives. We consider ourselves to be sportsmen, not murderers. Our goal is to conserve wildlife for future generations to enjoy, not to senselessly kill them because they damage our grass and shrubs.
Mt. Lebanon, and any community experiencing an overabundance of wildlife, should think more and kill less.
